چکیده

Microstreaming generated from oscillating microbubbles has great potential in microfluidic applications for localized flow control. In this study, we explore the use of teardrop-shaped cavities for trapping microbubbles. Upon acoustic actuation, these microbubbles confined in teardrop cavities can be utilized to generate a directional microstreaming flow. We further show that by altering the acoustic excitation frequency, a flow-switch for altering flow direction in microfluidic environments can be achieved using two oppositely arranged teardrop cavities with different sizes. In the end, we show that an array of such bubble-filled teardrop cavities can act as a fixated microfluidic transport system allowing for on-chip particle manipulation in complex flow patterns. This inexpensive method to create flows to switch and transport elements based on teardrop cavities can be widely employed for microfluidic applications such as drug delivery systems.

Oscillating bubbles: a versatile tool for lab on a chip applications.

With the fast development of acoustic and multiphase microfluidics in recent years, oscillating bubbles have drawn more-and-more attention due to their great potential in various Lab on a Chip (LOC) applications. Many innovative bubble-based devices have been explored in the past decade. In this article, we first briefly summarize current understanding of the physics of oscillating bubbles, and...

Interaction of two differently sized oscillating bubbles in a free field.

Most real life bubble dynamics applications involve multiple bubbles, for example, in cavitation erosion prevention, ultrasonic baths, underwater warfare, and medical applications involving microbubble contrast agents. Most scientific dealings with bubble-bubble interaction focus on two similarly sized bubbles. In this study, the interaction between two oscillating differently sized bubbles (ge...

Growing bubbles in a slightly supersaturated liquid solution.

We have designed and constructed an experimental system to study gas bubble growth in slightly supersaturated liquids. This is achieved by working with carbon dioxide dissolved in water, pressurized at a maximum of 1 MPa and applying a small pressure drop from saturation conditions. Bubbles grow from hydrophobic cavities etched on silicon wafers, which allows us to control their number and posi...

Photon bubbles in ultracold matter.

We show that static and oscillating photon bubbles can be excited by diffused light in the laser cooled matter confined in a magneto-optical trap. The bubble instability is due to the coupling between the radiation field and the mean field oscillations of the ultracold gas, and it can provide a source for low frequency turbulence. We consider a diffusion-dominated regime, which can be described...

Bubble collisions and defect formation in a damping environment.

Within the context of a first-order phase transition in the early Universe, we study the collision process for vacuum bubbles expanding in a plasma. The effects of the plasma are simulated by introducing a damping term in the equations of motion for a U(1) global field. We find that Lorentz-contracted spherically symmetric domain walls adequately describe the overdamped motion of the bubbles in...
